AB - In 2023, a consortium consisting of Anglo American, CMB.TECH, Freeport Saldanha, VUKA Marine, and Engie (as well as former member Tata Steel) was convened by the Global Maritime Forum with the objective to explore and define a concept for developing a green shipping corridor on the South Africa-Europe iron ore trade route. After regular meetings in 2023 and 2024, the work to conduct a feasibility analysis kicked off at the end of 2024 and was completed in September 2025. The South Africa-Europe iron ore green corridor initiative builds on previous work by the P4G-Getting to Zero Coalition Partnership the World Economic Forum and the World Bank, all of which identified opportunities for South Africa to become a key player in the global energy transition and shipping’s decarbonisation.
