Making Net-Zero Ammonia Possible: An Industry-baked 1.5degC-aligned transition strategy

Abstract

A Sector Transition Strategy is a suite of user-friendly tools (including a report, an online explorer, and an open-source model) aiming to inform decision makers from the public and private sectors about the nature, timing, cost, and scale of actions necessary to deliver net zero within the sector by 2050 and to comply with a 1.5°C target. MPP’s report maps critical steps for – including emissions data and real-economy milestones – for the sector to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The strategy forecasts strong demand for both green ammonia (where the hydrogen is produced via electrolysis from renewable electricity and water) and blue ammonia (from hydrogen produced from natural gas with carbon capture) with green ammonia emerging as the dominant material.
